Dental Cleaning
- Teeth cleaning:
Routine dental cleanings can play a major role in enhancing your overall health and well-being. In fact, routine dental cleanings can prevent further serious oral health complications, related to teeth and gums.
Dental cleaning is a set of preventative procedures performed to maintain or achieve optimum oral health. In a dental cleaning session, the dentist aims to remove the soft and hard deposits (plaque and calculus) above, around, and just below the gum line by scaling, which is a technique that is used to remove plaque and calculus from the root surfaces of your teeth, to maintain oral health and prevent further complications, like gum disease and dental cavities that can lead to tooth loss.
Professional dental cleaning involves the use of three cleaning techniques:
- Tooth scaling: Regular brushing and flossing stop plaque from building up and hardening into calculus. Once you have calculus, it can’t be removed at home and must be cleaned professionally.
Scaling is the process of removing the layers of substances that accumulate on the teeth’ surface. - Tooth scrubbing and polishing: Performed after scaling, polishing is the process of making the surface of the teeth smoother by using a powerful electric brush with slightly abrasive toothpaste to deeply clean and smoothen your teeth. This step also removes any minor enamel stains and makes it more difficult for bacteria and plaque to accumulate on your teeth.
- Debridement: Debridement is used when too much calculus has accumulated and scaling cannot remove them on its own.
A gross debridement, which is a deep cleaning used to remove calculus and plaque in all areas of the mouth, is often utilized for individuals who have not visited the dentist in a while.
