Same-Visit Prosthodontics/Dentures
Same-day dentures are a type of denture that is put in place straight after your teeth have been extracted. Often called ”immediate dentures”. Same-day dentures are fit into the mouth immediately after tooth extraction. They can therefore be a great confidence boost for people losing their natural teeth. Such dentures are used to immediately fill the gaps left by the removal or loss of one or multiple teeth.
These types of dentures are also used by people who have already lost their teeth and need a new denture made up within 24 hours. Same-day dentures can come with some fantastic benefits such as enabling those undergoing teeth extractions to improve their confidence and prevent them from spending weeks (sometimes even months) without replacement teeth.
- The process of same-day denture
For those getting same-day dentures after an extraction, a dentist or dental technician will take impressions of the teeth beforehand using a mold. The dentures are then created from this impression and are made ready to be implanted as soon as possible and on the day of the extraction. As soon as the teeth are taken out, the custom-made denture will be fitted over the gums, allowing the gum tissue to heal with an added degree of protection whilst the denture sits in the mouth, filling the spaces otherwise left behind.
The healing process for this can last several months, during which time you will have to revisit the clinic for check-ups and denture relining. Having same-day dentures relined can help to ensure they stay fitted correctly, which in itself will help increase their lifetime and overall longevity. Once the healing process is complete the same day dentures are typically replaced with a brand-new set that is meant to both look and fit better than the previous set. Some people may at this point in the process opt for implants or a more permanent set of teeth.
